Nathan May grew up in Rexburg Idaho, where as a child he performed on violin with his family in numerous family, church, and community events. In the sixth grade he switched to the double bass by the invitation of his orchestra teacher, and instantly fell in love with his new instrument. During High School he began taking lessons with Dr. Aaron Miller, professor of double bass at Brigham-Young University Idaho. He has continued his studies with Dr. Miller for the last eight years. Nathan was accepted to BYU-I’s music program as a recipient of the BYUI Talent scholarship. During his time as a student at BYU-I, Nathan competed in the BYUI Concerto Competition and won in April of 2017. He also was accepted to summer music festivals in Sewanee, Tennessee and Domaine Forget, Quebec. At Domaine Forget, He learned from bass luminaries Francois Rabbath, Paul Ellison, and others. He is a member of the Idaho Falls Symphony, currently as the Acting Principal Bass. He has recently commissioned a new double bass from bass luthier Seth Kimmel, which will be completed in December 2018.
